Must-Read Journal Article Addresses Accounting Project

The most recent issue of the Journal of Equipment Lease Financing included a comprehensive article on the recent accounting deliberations relating to the accounting for leasing project, a project intended to replace the existing "risks and rewards" based on accounting for leases (FASB 13 and IAS 17) with a "rights and obligations" approach (the New Approach).

Co-authored by Rod Hurd, chief financial officer, Director of Bridgeway Captial Advisors, Inc., and Don L. Weaver, an attorney with Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP, the "The Proposed New Approach to Accounting for Leases" article is a must-read for anyone with a keen interest in the project's outcome, including those who are actively engaged in new business development or are responsible for financial planning and reporting activities.

Did You Know?

Equipment leasing began in Mexico in the early 1960s, at the same time as the US leasing industry started its first international expansion. Today, the legal ownership of equipment subject to a lease in Mexico is based on the form of the transaction rather than its economic substance. In other words, the lessor always is the owner of the equipment for legal purposes. In this respect, therefore, it is important to bear in mind that the legal definition of a lease may not exactly match the accounting or tax definition.
