Teaching Case Studies

Case studies are an excellent way to achieve understanding of equipment leasing issues in the corporate training setting and the class setting. The Foundation has funded case studies, developed and published by the Darden Graduate School, University of Virginia. The Case Studies have been very well received in the corporate training setting and the academic community.

Case Study: Lease vs. Buy Decision (96k PDF File Adobe PDF)
This Case study was conducted by Darden School, University of Virginia, in cooperation with BNY Capital Funding LLC and examines the lease vs. buy decision Amtrak considered to operate the Acela Regional Service with their new Acela Trains. Three funding options were available for Amtrak to gain use of the equipment:

  1. borrow money to fund the purchase;
  2. lease the equipment from a financial institution such as BNYCF;
  3. rely on federal sources for funding.

Interactive Case Studies:

Students can choose from two case studies, depending on their level of expertise and experience. Students engage in interactive simulations of actual credit analysis scenarios. They gather information, make virtual client visits, screen leases for policy exceptions, assess the risk of payment default and loss, structure credit facilities and then price them to determine if profitability is sufficient to warrant a "go" decision. Finally, they compare their steps and decisions with those of an "expert analyst" to see how they could have performed better.
